AUTISM AND CHIROPRACTIC CARE

From the British publication, the Manchester Evening Star comes an article about an eight-year-old boy Daniel, whose life has been changed for the better by chiropractic. The story starts with Daniels mother, Susan Crisp taking Daniel to the chiropractor and notes that Susan and her husband, Gary, firmly believe that this care has been key to the recent improvements they’ve seen in Daniels development. “His communication has improved tremendously,” says Susan.
Susan Crisp chronicled Daniel’s progress by stating, “He has started putting three or four words together and it is not in response to questions from us. It’s spontaneous. At one time, if he wanted something out of the fridge he would drag me to it and point. Now he’ll say, ‘Mummy, I want’. “He doesn’t seem so closed in as he once was and is interacting more with his three older sisters.”
Daniel’s success adds weight to two separate papers published in two scientific journals where studies documented a significant improvement in autistic children under chiropractic care. In one of those studies involving 14 children, 12 showed significant improvement and two of the children improved so much that they no longer met the criteria to be classified as autistic.
The British article concludes with comments from Daniel’s mother, Susan, where she notes how he enjoys the care, “But it’s not just a matter of Daniel enjoying it. Within four to six weeks we noticed a huge improvement in his condition. “We took him in June and by August people who don’t see him regularly commented that his speech had come on tremendously. He started to initiate sentences – it was a real surprise, to us.” She concluded by saying, “The chiropractic was like turning a key, opening the door and it all came out of him. “It’s not a cure but it can alleviate some of the difficulties.”

Dr. Mark Jensen grew up in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota, a small town in the southeastern part of the state. During his childhood, he participated in many sports such as football, basketball, baseball, track, and hockey. He later became involved in golf and rugby as well and has been no stranger to sports injuries. These injuries and a knack for science and biology led to an interest in health care, although it was an auto accident while attending the University of Minnesota that led to his first chiropractic experience. So impressed by the quality of the care and the 100% natural approach of chiropractic, he accepted the challenge of becoming a Chiropractor. Six years later in 1996, he graduated from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Bloomington, Minnesota with both Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Chiropractic degrees.

Following graduation, Dr. Jensen relocated from Minnesota to Rocky Mount, North Carolina where, as an associate with Hammer Chiropractic, he treated thousands of patients young and old suffering auto accident and athletic injuries, neck and low back pain, headaches, TMJ, sciatica, disc injuries, and carpal tunnel syndrome, among many other conditions. After nine years of practice in Rocky Mount, Dr. Jensen decided to open his own office in Raleigh, and in October 2006, opened Corrective Chiropractic.
Corrective Chiropractic is conveniently located in the Glenwood South area of downtown Raleigh. This beautiful office offers state of the art technology used to detect and correct posture and spinal dysfunction, utilizing computerized thermal and muscle testing and high-speed full spine x-ray as well as spinal traction. Dr. Jensen uses several spinal adjusting techniques (Diversified, Gonstead, and CBP) as well as soft tissue adjusting techniques (active myofascial release, trigger point therapy and electric stimulation). Neuromuscular retraining and exercise are also used to help retrain the body to healthier patterns of function.

Corrective Chiropractic is a large chiropractic office that services many Raleigh families. Dr. Jensen’s mission through Corrective Chiropractic is to educate and adjust as many families toward optimal health using natural chiropractic care. To fulfill this purpose, Dr. Jensen provides education through classes in his office and at venues around town such as the YWCA and Target. He is also active at many local health fairs and 5K races around Raleigh; he further donates his time in support of the Raleigh Rugby Club (2007 Division II National Rugby Champions) and is available to speak to local organizations and office groups about natural and proactive health care.
Continuing education is important to Dr. Jensen who consistently reads chiropractic journals for the latest news and health updates, and attends seminars throughout the country to study the latest information and techniques for the benefit of his patients.

Dr. Jensen resides in Raleigh and enjoys sports of all kinds. In his free time, he can often be found traveling with his fiancee, Kelly or at home cooking and hanging out with their dogs.

JJ VIRGIN/CANCER PATIENTS IMPROVED QUALITY OF LIFE
An article published in the January issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics follows two case studies of patients with various types of serious cancer. The article follows the chiropractic care and its effect on these patients pain and quality of life.
Gastric cancer cells in ascites fluid The first patient was a 57-year-old man with serious terminal pancreatic cancer. This patient received chiropractic care during the later stages of the disease. In the remaining time, the patient had before succumbing to the disease it was documented that the patient had significantly less pain and was able to reduce his medications. The journal article summed up this case by stating, “In this case, chiropractic care was able to provide significant pain relief, reduce the amount of pain medication being taken (as well as the potential side effects), and temporarily improve the quality of life for a patient with terminal cancer.”
The second patient was a 54-year-old man recovering from surgery for lung cancer. This patient was continually suffering from upper back pain and had gotten no relief for over one year. At that point, the patient began chiropractic care. In this case, the patient received immediate relief and was able to discontinue all pain medication after two chiropractic visits.
The principles of chiropractic make it plain that the focus of chiropractic care is not to directly treat the patient’s pain but rather to assist the body and allow the body’s own healing abilities to work at that person’s maximum potential. These case studies show that ability and effect on people suffering from serious conditions. The Journal article states it best when it said, “These clinical examples offer 2 specific instances of how chiropractic may improve the quality of a cancer patient’s life.”

ASTHMA STUDY SHOWS CHIROPRACTIC BENEFITS

From a recent issue of Todays Chiropractic, comes a study report on Asthma. The article notes that approximately 14 Americans die each day from asthma. Asthma is only one of three diseases that have shown an increasing death rate in recent years, up 58% since 1979. Presently estimates say that 17 million Americans suffer from the disease making it the most common and costly illness in the United States today, costing over $13 billion annually. Presently, asthma causes more hospitalizations of children than any other childhood disease.
In the study, 47 patients were observed for a two year period. These patients had all been medically diagnosed with persistent asthma ranging from mild persistent in 11 cases, moderate persistent in 28 cases, to severe persistent in 8 cases. The care rendered consisted of specific chiropractic adjustments. The range of visits was from 14 to 44, with the average being 26 during the study period. Most patients in the study began care at a rate of 3 visits per week with this frequency being reduced after 4 to 8 initial weeks.
The patient results were very good with all 47 of the study patients showing a marked improvement ranging from 87 to 100 percent. The patient observed improvement was measured by both improvement in their symptoms as well as a decrease in their usage of acute asthma attack medication. Even more impressive was that all of the patients in the study reported maintaining their improvement after a two-year follow-up.
